Our Movement Disorders Clinic has been built by Mariecken Fowler, M.D. and now rivals the Movement Disorders Clinic at many academic centers. We offer all levels of evaluation and management of movement disorders. This includes diagnosis and many treatment options, both medical and surgical. Dr. Fowler did specialized training and research in Movement Disorders during her residency at the Mayo Clinic.
At Winchester Neurological Consultants, we have developed a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of movement disorders including Parkinson’s Disease, Parkinson’s-Plus Syndromes, and Essential Tremor. Dr. Fowler works with Dr. Lee Selznick of Neurosurgery, Physical Therapists, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation physicians, and Neuropsychologists to determine an individualized treatment plan. Our goal is to keep our patients living active, productive lives.
DBS:
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a safe and effective therapy for management of some of the most disabling motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and Essential Tremor. DBS surgery is now offered at Winchester Medical Center under the comprehensive expert care of Dr. Mariecken Fowler, Neurologist, Dr. Lee Selznick, Neurosurgeon, and Dr. Dominique Vinh, Rehabilitation.
We provide initial assessment and evaluation regarding whether patients are good surgical candidates. Testing during the surgical evaluation will likely include neuroimaging and cognitive testing. We coordinate surgical planning and the surgical process in a multidisciplinary approach with Dr. Selznick. A unique aspect of our program is that your neurologist, Dr. Fowler is present in the operating room during the DBS placement. She does neurophysiological monitoring in the operating room and motor examination during the placement of the DBS wires to ensure the best placement of the stimulator. Dr. Fowler provides continued team management of the disease process after placement, including DBS and medication management. We provide DBS adjustments in our office. Treatment is aimed at reducing tremor and rigidity that comes along with Parkinson’s disease as well as improved tremor control for Essential Tremor.
